There’s no single best time to visit Australia from India, because Australia is huge. When it’s cold and rainy in Melbourne, it can be sunny and 26°C in Cairns. The good news is that this means there’s always somewhere great to go.
The other thing to remember: Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons run opposite to India’s. December is summer. June is winter.
Short answer: For most first trips covering Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast, aim for September to November or March to May. For the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and the tropical north, go between May and October.
Australia’s seasons at a glance
- Summer: December to February
- Autumn: March to May
- Winter: June to August
- Spring: September to November
These apply to the southern half of the country: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Canberra and Tasmania. The tropical north (Cairns, Darwin, Broome) works differently. It has a wet season from roughly November to April and a dry season from May to October.
Spring (September to November)
Spring is one of the best times to visit Australia. Days are mild, gardens are in bloom and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. Western Australia’s wildflower season is in full swing, and whale watching continues along the east coast.
Good to know for Indian travellers: Diwali and the October school break fall in Australian spring, so it’s a great window for a family trip. Many Australian cities also hold big Diwali festivals.
Summer (December to February)
This is beach season. Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne can be hot, with some days above 35°C. It’s also when Australians take their own holidays, so flights and hotels cost the most and popular spots get busy.
Summer highlights include New Year’s Eve fireworks on Sydney Harbour and the Australian Open tennis in Melbourne in January.
Skip the tropical north at this time unless you don’t mind heat, humidity, heavy rain and the occasional cyclone. Box jellyfish (“stingers”) are also more common in northern waters from about November to May.
Autumn (March to May)
Autumn is underrated. The weather is settled and warm without being hot, the sea is still pleasant for swimming in the south, and it’s harvest time in wine regions like the Barossa and Yarra Valley. Crowds thin out after Easter.
It’s a great time for a Great Ocean Road road trip or exploring Melbourne.
Winter (June to August)
Winter in the south is cool and crisp. Expect around 14–17°C during the day in Melbourne and Sydney, and colder nights. There’s snow in the Alpine areas of Victoria and New South Wales, and Tasmania gets properly cold.
This is also the best time for the north and the Outback. Cairns, the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef enjoy warm, dry days, and Uluru is comfortable for walking. Indian summer holidays in May and June line up perfectly with this.
Best time to visit by destination
- Sydney: September to November and March to May
- Melbourne: March to May and October to November (pack layers year-round)
- Gold Coast and Brisbane: almost any time, but April to October is drier and less humid
- Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef: June to October
- Uluru and the Red Centre: April to September
- Perth: September to November for wildflowers, March to May for beaches
- Tasmania: November to April
When should you avoid visiting?
- Late December to January if you want to avoid peak prices and crowds.
- The tropical north in January to March because of heavy rain and cyclone risk.
- The Outback in summer when daytime temperatures can be extreme.
